JULY 20 – SEPTEMBER 22, 2019
The Amorepacific Museum of Art Project (APMAP) is a cultural initiative to create and install public art in prominent outdoor spaces. Part II of this project shines a spotlight on Jeju Island, where four annual exhibitions are being held from 2017 to 2020 (respectively). By presenting an array of new artworks on themes related to the island—including its legends, nature, people, and art—APMAP highlights Jeju as a cultural destination and a hotbed for contemporary art. Following the first exhibition (which dealt with the mythical birth of Jeju Island through diverse legends and folklore) and the second exhibition (which covered the amazing natural wonders of this volcanic island), APMAP 2019 JEJU focuses on the people who have made Jeju the foundation of their lives, thus forming the core of island’s unique culture. For this exhibition, held at Osulloc Tea Museum in Jeju, fifteen participating artists and teams employ their own innovative aesthetic perspectives to enhance our understanding of the lives of the Jeju people and illuminate the extraordinary value of the island’s culture.
The third exhibition of Part II of the Amorepacific Museum of Art Project (APMAP) focuses on the people of Jeju Island. In Korea, Jeju Island is renowned for its abundance of rocks and wind. This environment has had a profound impact on the lives of the Jeju people, enabling them to cultivate a lifestyle and culture that can be found nowhere else in the world. Immersing themselves in the lives of their subjects, the fifteen participating artists and teams personally visited various sites of the island, and then creatively interpreted their experiences in site-specific works. Through the indoor and outdoor artworks displayed at Osulloc Tea Museum, visitors can indirectly experience life and culture on different parts of the island, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the remarkable residents of Jeju Island.
