APMAP 2016 yongsan

July 8 – September 3, 2017

With the objective to make Jeju known to the world and to make over Jeju into an ‘island of contemporary art’ where people experience and enjoy a wide spectrum of contemporary art, the project will concentrate on exhibitions whose thematic focus is placed on diverse aspects of Jeju from 2017 to 2020. Co-organized together with OSULLOC Tea Museum and dealing with the theme of ‘mystic birth,’ this year’s exhibition features works through which stories of Jeju are unfolded intriguingly. The sixteen participating individual artists and groups visited different areas of Jeju whose myths and folktales are delved into by them so that they translated the inspirations they derived from them into works of art.

mystic birth

APMAP 2017 jeju, the first show of part Ⅱ, deals with the tales related to the birth of Jeju. The 16 participating artist groups delve into the tales of different areas of Jeju and reinterpret them into artworks. These works inspired by numerous myths and legends passed on in Jeju embody the mysteriousness of the birth of Jeju and simultaneously the aspirations of those islanders who led a life far from land. This show enables viewers to interact with the works installed in both indoor and outdoor spaces and to have indirect encounters with various places related to the birth of Jeju.
